Airport news:

A massive expansion plan is underway at the airport, with general modernisation work planned up until the year 2030. Most of the work involved will revolve around upgrading the airport's terminals and adding additional boarding gates.

Information:

There are information desks in the terminals, and general airport information is also available through an information line (tel: +1 612 726 5555). Volunteers provide a 'Travellers Assistance' service (tel: +1 612 726 5500) at the airport; the central office is located near the entrance to Concourse D at the Terminal 1-Lindbergh Terminal and is open daily from 0800 to 2000.

Driving directions:

Both terminals are bordered by Highway 62, Interstate 494, Highway 77 and Highway 5. From central Minneapolis, follow Interstate 35 southbound, turn onto Interstate 494 eastbound and follow the exit signs to reach the terminals. The total drive time to the airport from Minneapolis or from St Paul is approximately 20 minutes. From St Paul, follow Interstate 35E southwards to the West 7th St/MN-5 exit; turn right here and travel westwards to MN-5, following signs to Terminal 1, which is directly off MN-5.

Transfer between terminals:

Free light rail trains link the main Terminal 1-Lindbergh building to Terminal 2-Humphrey, departures every 10-15 minutes. A free shuttle bus service operates between the terminals for those with reduced mobility (tel: +1 612 713 7488).

Public Transport

Public transport road:

Bus: City buses, operated by Metro Transit (tel: +1 612 373 3333;www.metrotransit.org), provide transportation throughout the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area; these pick up from the Transit Centre on the east side of the Blue and Red car parks at Terminal 1-Lindbergh.

Shuttle: Shared ride shuttle services operated by SuperShuttle (tel: +1 800 258 3826; www.supershuttle.com) run between Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and city destinations.

Taxi: Taxis are available from a booth of level T at Terminal 1-Lindbergh and from the Humphrey Ground Transportation Centre at Terminal 2-Humphrey.

Public transport rail:

Rail: A light rail service operates from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (tel: +1 612 373 3333; www.metrotransit.org). Trains stop at both terminals and connect passengers to 15 other destinations, including downtown Minneapolis to the north and the Mall of America in Bloomington to the south.

Trains run between the terminals every seven or eight minutes during peak hours and every 10 to 15 minutes at other times of the day. The journey time is around 30 minutes.

Terminal facilities

Money:

ATMs and bureaux de change are available in both terminals. A bank is located in Terminal 1-Lindebergh; open Mon-Fri, 0800-1600.

Food:

There is a selection of coffee shops, restaurants, bars, ice cream parlours, fast-food outlets and snack bars in both terminals, though the majority of these are housed in Terminal 1-Lindebergh.

Shopping:

There are plenty of shopping opportunities, including duty-free outlets. These are mainly concentrated in The Mall shopping area of Terminal 1-Lindebergh.

Luggage:

Storage lockers are available in secure areas of Terminal 1-Lindebergh, while a lost and found service (tel: +1 612 726 5141) is located on the mezzanine level of the same terminal.

Other:

There is a family room with baby-change facilities, playroom and a nursing mothers' room in Terminal 1-Lindebergh. Children's play areas can be found in both terminals as can 'pet relief areas'.

Airport facilities

Conference and business:

The airport conference centre (tel: +1 612 794 4500) in Terminal 1-Lindbergh has facilities for up to 100 people, including copying machines, fax, computers and courier services. It offers travellers private work stations with data ports; FedEx service, postage machines and ATMs are also available at these sites.

Communication Facilities:

Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, including both terminal buildings. Postal services include package drop boxes in both terminals.

Disabled facilities:

Facilities for the physically disabled at the airport include: lifts, toilets, electric carts and TDD phones. Reserved parking for disabled passengers is available. Passengers should request wheelchairs from their airline prior to travel.

The airport's website has a list of transport options for disabled travellers, including service providers and contact details.

Travellers Assistance (tel: +1 612 726 5500) can also provide help and information for disabled passengers. It has a central office and waiting area near Concourse D in Terminal 1 and an information booth in Baggage Claim, Level 1, Terminal 2.

Any passengers who may require additional assistance are advised to contact their airline before travelling.

Car parking:

There are several car parks with direct access to the terminals, providing short-term, general, valet and discounted long-term parking facilities. There is a free 'cell phone' lot for drivers awaiting arrivals, midway between the two terminals on Post Road. Car rental:

Major car hire companies: Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty are represented at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.

Car hire counters can be found on the second and third levels between the blue and red car parks in Terminal 1-Lindebergh's Hub Building, which is connected to the terminals by an underground tram. At Terminal 2-Humphrey, car hire counters are found in the Ground Transport Centre on the ground level of the Purple parking ramp, directly across from the terminal building.
