Currency information
US Dollar (USD; symbol $) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of $100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins are in denominations of $1, and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.
The US Dollar replaced The Netherlands Antilles Guilder or Florin as the currency of Bonaire on 1 January 2011.
Credit cards
American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa are widely accepted.
Travellers cheques
To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US Dollars.
Banking hours
Mon-Fri 0900-1200 and 1400-1600.
Currency restrictions
There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. Sums exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 US$ need to be declared.
Currency exchange
Most major currencies, including US Dollars, Pounds Sterling and Euros, are easily exchanged. ATMs are located around the island.
Bonaire duty free
Overview
The following items may be imported into Bonaire by travellers over 17 years of age (tobacco products) or over 18 years of age (alcohol) without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 50 cigarillos or 25 cigars or 125g of tobacco.
• 1L of spirits over 22% or 1L of spirits less than 22%.
• 2L of non-sparkling wine.
• Gifts up to a value of US$500 (or US$150 for children under 15).
Banned Imports
The import of the following items is prohibited: medicines (except those intended for personal use), narcotics and weapons, protected animals, plants, shells and the like.
