Alderney Shopping and nightlife

Shopping in Alderney

Shoppers in Alderney take delight in the fact that no VAT means affordable retail therapy is at hand. Goods such as sports equipment, perfume, clothing and electrical items are all less expensive than the mainland. And before departure, Alderney has its own duty-free retail outlets where visitors can purchase spirits and tobacco at exceptionally low prices.

The town of St Anne has a variety of boutiques selling gifts and kitchenware, but Alderny pullovers, pottery and crafts make for the best souvenirs. Getting a 'taste' of Alderny is additionally enjoyable in the form of island's dairy ice cream.

Shopping hours

These vary, but the majority of shops open Mon-Sat 0900-1730. Shops generally close for lunch and on Wednesday afternoons. Shops may open on Sundays during the high season.

Nightlife in Alderney

There are no clubs on this little island, so nightlife options include picking up fish and chips and eating them on the beach, visiting a local pub, or a stroll down Braye Street or the High Street in Douglas. Sipping a glass of wine from a waterside bar, from where you can watch the boats and sea life, is a great way to finish off the day. Licensing hours are very relaxed, and children are welcome in pubs.
