Things to do in Cleveland

Discover Christmas all year round

Originally used for the exterior shots of Ralphie Parker's house in yuletide classic A Christmas Story, this abode at 3159 W 11th Street was bought by super fan Brian Jones and turned into an exact replica. If that wasn't 'Ohio's Most Weirdest' enough, it's also a museum (tel: +1 216-298-4919; www.achristmasstoryhouse.com). God bless America.

Get on your bike, indoors and out

If it's been a while since your last ride, hone your cycling skills at Ray's MTB Indoor Park (tel: +1 216 631 7433; www.raysmtb.com) before heading out to the outdoor trails around the city. A full list can be found at Clemet Parks (tel: +1 216 635 3200)

Get your kayaks out on the Cuyahoga River

Cleveland is blessed with multitudinous options for those fond of aquatic action, and you can see many of Cleveland's main sights from the Cuyahoga River. 41° North offers courses for beginners in everything from stand-up paddleboarding to sea kayaking (tel: +1 866 529 2541; www.kayak41north.com).

Let down your hair at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum

This museum (tel: +1 216 781 7625; www.rockhall.com) says that it "exists to collect, preserve and interpret the impact rock has made on our world". It more than lives up to its statements, with its ever-changing exhibits giving us all a chance to walk among the most important rock and roll artifacts on the planet.

Take precaution at the Contraception Museum

If you've ever wondered how people sought to control their fertility over the last millennia, this mind-expanding collection is for you. Housed at the Case Western Reserve University (http://artsci.case.edu/dittrick/collections/aritfacts/contraception-collection/) it contains a selection of ingenious and often-terrifying contraceptive instruments - from deerskins to mule's ear wax, to the boring old pill.
