Flying to Cleveland

Although there are no direct flights from the UK to Cleveland, airlines offering flights via their US/Canadian hubs include American Airlines, Delta, United and Air Canada. Flights are cheaper in winter, due to Cleveland’s cold and snowy climate.

Travel by road

Traffic drives on the right and the minimum age for unsupervised driving in Cleveland is 18 years. Freeways have a maximum speed limit of 113kph (70mph) or 105kph (65mph). Two-lane highways have a maximum speed limit of 89kph (55mph). Most city-centre speed limits are 56kph (35mph), but take care around schools, roadworks and heavily built-up areas, as this limit can drop to 32kph (20mph), with harsh penalties for breaking it. As with many cities, many highways have five lanes – two lanes in each direction and a centre lane used mainly for turning left. Foreign drivers who want to drive in Cleveland must have a licence from their country of origin and proof of insurance.

Routes

Cleveland is connected to its suburbs and the rest of the state by a series of interstate highways. I-90 and I-80 (Ohio Turnpike) run east-west through the Downtown, connecting Toledo in the west and Ashtabula in the east. Running south from the shores of Lake Erie, I-71 connects with Columbus and Cincinnati, while I-77 connects with Akron and the eastern half of Ohio. I-480 and I-271 services suburbs lying on the southern rim of the city centre, such as Brooklyn, Garfield Heights and Solon.

Travel by Rail

Services

The main railway station in Cleveland is Lakefront Station, 200 Cleveland Memorial Parkway. Amtrak offers direct daily services to Pittsburgh, New York and Chicago. Many other US cities on the Amtrak network are accessible, although journeys are often very long due to the distances involved.
