In Rio's summer (December to February), temperatures can reach 40ºC (104ºF) or more. When the heat is on, tourists should follow the Brazilian example and hit the beach and enjoy the breeze. These months are also peak season as millions come for the annual Carnival which is held in either January or February. During this time, flights are more expensive and hotels are charged at a premium.
Autumn (March to May) sees temperatures rapidly decline into the upper 20s. Plan your trip to coincide with Dia do Indio (Indian Day) on April 19 and enjoy a series of events honouring the nation's indigenous peoples.
Rio's winter (June to August) is never that cold, with temperatures rarely going below 17°C (63°F) though cold fronts and strong sea-borne winds may see you needing a light jacket for some evenings. Rainfall is at its lowest in winter, especially in July and August, when you might only expect a dozen rainy days in these months.
Spring (September to November) is warm and dry, with temperatures averaging out at 23°C (73°F). The lack of humidity makes visiting Rio during these months pleasant and enjoyable.
