Queen's Birthday Celebrations

The birthday of Queen Mother Sirikit is celebrated throughout Thailand but nowhere more so than in the capital, and particularly along Ratchadamnoen Avenue and in the area around the Grand Palace. Here, civic buildings and the streets themselves are festooned with coloured lights and decorations. Portraits of the popular queen, decorated with flowers, adorn many private houses as well as private buildings. The day is a national holiday throughout Thailand.

Chulalongkorn Day

Public holiday in memory of Rama V, who died in 1910 but is remembered as one of the great kings of Siam. The celebrations are best seen at the Equestrian Statue in the Royal Plaza.

Bangkok New Year Countdown

One of the biggest New Year parties in Thailand, Bangkok's New Year Countdown is a fabulous celebration which attracts revellers from all over the world. Highlights from the evening entertainment programme usually include a beer garden, crafts market and performances by some of the country's biggest and best-known singers, actors and musicians. And on the stroke of midnight, an incredible fireworks display announces the arrival of the New Year which is broadcast live on Thai television. Many of Bangkok's bigger shops and department stores also hold special sales with plenty of bargains to be found.
